Holiday Traditions
Simba
Christmas is a big part of our celebrated holidays. Every year my family and I love to completely over do everything. I guess you can say that we really DO deck the halls! We usually set up our Christmas tree the day after thanksgiving, and take it down the day after Christmas. Our tree is a real tree, with tons of lights, tinsel, candy canes, and a star at the top. Another tradition that we have, or a tradition that we don't have, if you will, is that we never have an official Christmas dinner, our dinner is usually just a normal daily dinner. On Christmas day, we get up and look in our stockings really early, waiting for our parents to wake up. When they are up and about, we start to open gifts and celebrate the day. Living in Florida, it's not usually that cold on Christmas, and so we sometimes like to go outside to spend our Christmas. Once we spread our holiday cheer, we play with our gifts. On the day after Christmas, I like to go on web cam conversations with my friends and see what everyone received. After Christmas is said and done, we take down all of the decorations and prepare for New Years Eve.
On New Years, we usually go down to a small beach. On the beach they hold a big event with watermelon eating competitions, cake walks, dunking booths, rock walls, and the like. It is always a ton of fun to bring in the New Year. We also like to go swimming and catch baby crabs.
Pao
Some of the traditions my family and I do, us being Hispanic, include many things. For example we make something called "Sancocho Dominicano" that consists of beef, yuuca, plantains, chicken, and something called lomo. It comes out as a soup type thing but with all of that in it. Another thing my family and I do for the holidays is do a secret Santa. Since my family is so big, we have about a total of 160 people doing it, at the least. On the actual Christmas day, we get together and then exchange our gifts, but we try to keep it between a 10 and 50 dollar range.
On Christmas Eve, we have a huge party with over 100 people and I sometimes don't even know them! The men play dominoes and smoke cigars, the women are "decorating" the Christmas tree of the family. (We choose a house to put a Christmas tree for the entire family in) So every year, everyone gets at least one present. The kids, like me, usually do a go-kart race in the complex of the neighborhood; the winner gets a Gingerbread House. (I really hope I win this year!) And finally, the most important tradition my family does on Christmas, is have a Christmas dinner. The best part about it? I get to spend it with the people I love.
InvisibleDuck
Every Christmas Eve my family and family friends get together at one person's
house and open gifts, eat food, and play games. Everyone who knows how to play an instrument is expected to play at least one song. I usually play flute and do duets with my family. On Christmas Morning, we open our stockings at our own houses and find our gifts from Santa, which are usually hidden around the house.
