Make sure you keep your computer up to date with the latest security updates; you can do this by using Microsoft Update this will download and install all the latest security updates and sometimes some little extras!

Make sure any anti-virus or computer protection software is kept up to date by visiting the distributor’s websites; the more up to date your security is, the lower your security risk is. Always check for updates, at least once a week.

Check out for fishy software starting with your computer; you can check what programs are starting with your computer by going to start, click "Run", typing "msconfig" and checking the start-up tab. If you notice anything strange, use Google, do some research. You may find something you don’t want to start at all!

In case you do get a virus; take regular backups of your most important documents, you can use the Windows backup utility found in the accessories folder, then system tools within the start menu. This can be used to create a compact file of your backed up documents which can then be burnt to a CD or DVD.

Secure browsing; Keep an eye on your internet browsers privacy settings, the most secure way is to keep the security level to a maximum of medium. You should also disable third-party cookies, make sure you check links before you click on them and never download something that you’re not specifically looking for. You can change you browser settings by clicking tools and options.

When using instant messengers; make sure you only accept files from people you fully trust. Never accept a file from someone you’re not sure of, the file could contain a deadly virus.

Make sure you don’t ignore your security software; keep an eye on your security icons as they may be trying to tell you about a virus, if you’re not watching them, they’re pretty much useless. Make the most of them.

You can find a couple of anti-virus’ here:

AVG Free
Avast!
AntiVir
BitDefender
